Portfolio Development

Originally published at Smithi. Please leave any comments there.

Designing my portfolio has so far been the toughest to decide on a design. I don’t want it to overpower my work, but I don’t want it to look too simple either. I love simplicity though, maybe I will just end up leaving it extremely simple. Here is my first comp:

Emerging New Media Design and Imaging Tools

I created a song that was 30sec long using Garageband to convey the emotion of being ‘festive’. I was extremely excited when I saw the World section of loops in garageband. I knew I wanted to add an Indian touch to it, and had to make a decision between using the santoor or the sarod. I added my own simple composition with the piano and guitar which serves as the base. I used a few loops from Garageband for a santoor and two different types of tablas. It sounds like this:

I hope it sounds as joyous, merry, and celebratory as I had intended.

3D Garden - Programming in Director

Originally published at Smithi. You can comment here or there.

Here is a garden with lots of flowers and gazebo’s and ladybirds and a snail as the navigator/avatar.
Press ‘w’ to change camera angle to an overhead view.

Ladybirds - NPC’s
Gazebos - Obstacles
Flowers - Aesthetic purpose and obstacles
Fence - BoundarySo for my Programming for digital media class, we designed and programmed a 3D world which had an avatar to navigate it and some other npc’s (non-playable characters). These non-playable characters were used to demonstrate “behaviors” such as flocking. This behavior comprised of three important segments – alignment, avoidance, and cohesion.Alignment – the characters move in the same direction,
Avoidance – the characters that flock together don’t bump into each other, and finally
Cohesion – they travel as a group

Now moving on to talking about ‘my’ project, I designed a little garden (which I plan to improve and add functions to and make pretty as well) with a little snail as my avatar, which is probably a bit fast for itself. My npc’s are little ladybird bugs. I also decided to have a fence around my world as a boundary and to make the world interesting, I added some gazebo’s and flowers. It looks really bright right now and I hope to be able to add some more features later to make the exploring a little more fun. Any suggestions are absolutely welcome.

It was a bit of a pain to program in director in spite of receiving an immense amount of guidance from our professor. It was a challenge that ultimately helped me feel satisfied with the outcome. This is probably the best web-deployable 3D program available now.

We did a whole bunch of programming with vectors and having three dimensions only made it complicated but somehow extremely interesting to solve problems based on directions and axes.

Modeling 3d objects in Director wasn’t so great at all. We did have some functions for basic shapes but was tough to make something truly creative. We sure could have imported something from other programs but the whole process didn’t seem enticing enough.

I would like to see what Adobe puts out in the near future and I truly, sincerely hope they implement something for the undo option which goes back only ONCE! I made it a habit with director now to save my file every 10 seconds and save about 10 different versions. The undo button is a savior for many of us who work on projects such as these. I suppose it forces a better practice on us, but it would be helpful if the undo button was a bit more useful.

8th Annual IEEE Design Contest Poster

Originally published at Smithi. You can comment here or there.

The IEEE student chapter here at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) held a Poster Design contest for the 8th Annual IEEE Student Design Contest and here are the two comps I designed.

I generally go with a simplistic and minimal style which made one of the poster look like this:

Though I didn’t get selected as a winner or anything, it was fun to experiment with something that is different from my usual style. I tend to be very simplistic and symmetric most of the time, but here I decided to play around with a slightly asymmetrical focus.

For Science...umm..Chemistry actually

At 6:22am and after 3 cups of coffee I finish an exam on Thermodynamics and Gases with a 100%. This is the amount of effort and time and sleep I have to sacrifice for Chemistry. Damn do I like Chemistry or what..

Online classes suck big time because one has to be motivated to do the work. Atleast if I had to go to class, I would pay attention to deadlines. I realized that I have a 'starting problem' as in starting studying or a lot of things in general. Once i do though, I can't stop until its done. Maybe its because I know I will not stop, that I don't start because I could spend all that time doing something more interesting and fun. Old habits are hard to change.

And what is all this effort for...so that I can do this all over again tomorrow with another exam in two more topics! I am supposed to be on vacation...bah.

As i write my final paper before christmas break, i take this quiz to distract myself ;-)

You taste like a steaming hot bowl of gazpacho.
You are spicy and diverse. Your delicately

Glad if i am back in Rochester or sad i am not in India?

I finally landed in Rochester last night after a 31 hour journey! I am glad to be back here but i miss home already. What a summer it has been!
The flight - worst ever. The guy beside me didn't let me sleep:( coz he kept talking to me and telling me his family history and stuff.
Like that wasn't enough, when we had an hour long stop at Paris, he wanted me to get off the flight with him and show him around !? does he think? we're "hum tum" ?!?
i cudn't wait to come home, i kept asking the guy for the time every 30min. of so when he finally asked me if i wanted his watch:p

I was also extremely tired and sleepy by the time i reached Newark. i went through security check twice and took the air-train to the same terminal thrice!! Even the security people recognised me and asked me if i was alright :|

The most amusing part was when a good number of people asked me if i was Married when they saw the mehendi on my hands!
The Liberty International AIrport at NJ is filled with Indians and Pakistani's...it felt like i was in Hyderabad!

And Shane!! YAY!!

What can i say...

Its about 4:20 and like always i am not sleepy yet. So, after wasting some time online i come downstairs so i can try and fall asleep on my bed. I turn on the light and find him all curled up right in the middle of 'my' bed exactly where i sleep. Since i am not even close to being sleepy, i decide to read some book. I make space for myself after trying to move him and lay on 'my' bed. Few minutes later, he gets up turns round in a circle and falls down on my bed resting his head on my feet. Then a few more minutes later, jumps off 'my' bed and trots(yes, trots) out of the room, takes his usual walk around the house, comes back and sits down beside me on the floor staring into my face like i stole his(my) bed! Yeah, then slowly he begins whining and even growling. Next he starts pawing at the edge of 'my' bed as if to touch my hand or something and make me listen. Thought he needed a mid-night(early morning rather) snack and i give him some of his food.
He happily eats all of it and trots back into the room and starts whining yet again and pawing the side of the bed. I pet him on his head and for a few brief moments he stops whining and wags his tail. i try getting back to reading my book but he doesn't stop whining and growling. I wake up my governess and complain about him not staying quiet and she told me the most shocking(maybe even embarassing) fact/thing ever!!!

That creature wanted me to turn off the light and leave MY bed to HIM(meaning buzz off) so he could sleep in peace! I did that and he did not make a sound!!

I am speechless

The Keys to the bottom of the core of my Heart ;-)

OOOh, before anything, this is my first post when i am a lil' flirty:p
I am also now sleepy and bored and miss him a lot.

The Keys to Your Heart

You are attracted to good manners and elegance.

In love, you feel the most alive when things are straight-forward, and you're told that you're loved.

You'd like to your lover to think you are loyal and faithful... that you'll never change.

You would be forced to break up with someone who was ruthless, cold-blooded, and sarcastic.

Your ideal relationship is lasting. You want a relationship that looks to the future... one you can grow with.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage as something precious. You'll treasure marriage and treat it as sacred.

In this moment, you think of love as commitment. Love only works when both people are totally devoted.

Ahhh...i know what to do-time to chill with a cooler ;-)

Thought

Only one species in this world has the power to protect all others.
US.

I've been watching a lot of Animal Planet lately and my favourite documentaries are the ones about the survival of Tigers all around the world and the second being documentaries on Whales. It hurts to learn how many of these creatures disappear from the face of this earth everyday. It is depressing how for the progression and expansion of the human species, habitats are being exploited, polluted and destroyed.

Sometimes i wonder, where are we going with all the advancement we are achieving. Actually, i wouldn't call it advancement, i would call it losing our humanness by not only killing people, but even exploiting what 'we' call animals.
